I believe that Manzoni’s “Artist’s Shit” and “Artist’s Breath” are considered art, but are more conceptual than visual. The art is seen in the ideas behind the two rather than what they actually look like. This is a complete turnaround from the past works of some the most renowned artists historically like Da Vinci and Michelangelo; they focused on creating beauty and elegance for the eye. Take for example “Artist’s Shit,” the title does not lie, the piece is literally human defecation in a can. Obviously this piece is revolting, but maybe this is exactly what Manzoni is trying to portray; the most disgusting thing a human can do. The other piece “Artist’s Breath” is a blown up red balloon attached to a piece of wood. One may ask themselves “Where is the Art in this?” The work is not too visually appealing or striking; on the contrary it is very simple. This could be what Manzoni is going for, the idea of simplicity. Another artistic feature of Manzoni’s works is the varied interpretations of the art and how people can have their own outlook on what the pieces mean to them. This type of art is groundbreaking as it challenges the traditional values of art and changes the dynamic of how one views art and begs questions such as, What do we value as Art? How do you define art?

  1. You make a solid point about conceptual vs visual art and we did not talk about it in class.
