Art Experience 1: Legacy of Light

During the beginning of the year my RCC went to a play called Legacy of Light at the MadCow Theatre downtown. The play centered around two stories, one placed in the past and one in the present. The story of the past centered around a woman, Emalie who became pregnant by her lover at an old age and was almost certain that she would face death upon the arrival of her child. Because she was so certain that her death was impending, she began working tirelessly on her mathematics and physics equations in order to make a lasting impression on the world before she was forced to leave. Meanwhile, in the present, Olivia, an astrophysist who has discovered a new solar system, decides to have a child with her husband through a surrogate because she had cancer and was left infertile. She choses Millie to become her surrogate because Millie insists that she has a dream to pursue fashion in Paris, but in reality she is just trying to keep her family afloat after her mother’s death. I would rate this play as mediocre. It seemed to drag on from time to time and while the actors had decent body language on stage, the accents of Emalie and her family continued to flip between American, French, and English. Meanwhile I found Olivia to be over acted. It was a little dry with very little humor, although there were many unsuccessful attempts. Overall, it was not horrible and the story line was complex enough that I wasn’t bored, but it is not something I would see again, even if another company put it on because it was not an interesting story and had no real punch or purpose.
